BOOK DESCRIPTION
The author of this book, Fei Wang, is an oral history writer who immigrated from China to Canada
in 2017. This book is his diary-style record of life as a new immigrant. Upon arriving in the new
country, everything he encountered and experienced was novel, specific, and detailed. As a writer,
he promptly documented his most authentic observations and feelings from his life and travels,
not only for personal reflection but also to provide a deeper understanding and contemplation for
those who have never been to Canada or have lived there for years without paying attention to or
thinking about it. The many misconceptions about Canadian life and culture, whether based on
hearsay, miscommunication, or personal biases, may become clearer through the author’s firsthand
accounts in this book. In addition to Toronto and Prince Edward Island, where the author mainly
lived during his seven years of immigration, he also visited many other regions of Canada and the
United States as a new immigrant and an oral history observer. The observations recorded about
these cities and regions further broaden the scope of North American life, providing readers with
more perspectives. As a commemoration, the final chapter of the book includes some of the
author’s earlier works from his life in China, covering various aspects of society, food, business,
travel, friendship, and family. These may provide friends with similar experiences another angle to
understand or reminisce about a place that is now distant yet close, familiar yet unfamiliar.
The book’s illustrator, Hai Yu, is a well-known Chinese photographer and journalist who has
accompanied the author through much of his life. Therefore, he is especially suited as the book’s
illustrator. Hai Yu’s photographic works focus on the relationship between humanity and society,
characterized by exquisite depth. His visual presentation of Canadian and American landscapes and
cultures enhances the textual part of the book significantly.
